Mike Dunn, owner/operator of Always on the Level Excavating, retired from the United States Navy in 1996 and moved his family to Mountain Home, in his home state of Texas.  Not being one to sit still for very long, Mike quickly began a septic pumping company in the Kerrville area.  His desire to learn a new trade took him to River Oaks Pools where he learned pool excavation from some of the best backhoe operators in the business.  Mike wanted to further stretch himself, so he apprenticed and became licensed to install septic systems at South Texas Wastewater. When the state required a license to be a septic maintenance provider, Mike successfully completed the first class offered to obtain that license.

In 2003, he bought his own backhoe and 1250lb hoe-ram (rock hammer), and started Always On The Level Excavating from his Mountain Home location. In 2005 he moved to Boerne in order to save his customers money by lowering his overhead costs and, more importantly, to be more accessible to his customers in Kendall, Bexar, Comal, Medina, Bandera, Guadalupe, Gillespie, and Kerr counties.  He has since added Water Storage Tank installation, rocksaw trenching, site preparation, lot clearing, and lot levelling.

Over the years Mike has excavated over 200 pools and installed over 300 septic systems.  He attributes the success of Always On the Level Excavating first to the goodness of God, then secondarily to working hard, dealing honestly with everyone, and being willing to go ‘the extra mile’ for his customers.  He is also aware that his customers have graciously recommended him to their friends and neighbors.  Success would not have been attainable without these recommendations and Mike is very grateful to them
